What is glass fusing?

In its crudest expression, fusing consists of melting some pieces of colored glass onto compatible flat glass and heating them in a kiln until they fuse together.

What may I create with fused glass?
  • enhanced flat glass for leaded pieces
  • platters
  • clockfaces
  • bowls
  • wall decorations

What equipment is needed for fusing glass?
  • carbide wheel glass cutter
  • grozzing/cutting pliers
  • kiln
  • compatible flat glass

Where do I learn to fuse glass?
Increasingly, suppliers of stained glass material also offers fusing classes. In fact, glass manufacturers strongly try to encourage these suppliers to teach the technique, because a fuser goes through a lot more glass than a stained glass crafter!

What other glass techniques may be combined with glass fusing
Flat fused pieces may be included in leaded windows, but one of the best ways to improve one's fused glass craft is to make multiple fused layers and combine with cold working techniques and polishing, or even sandblasting.
